The Atlantis theme of Subterranea 2023 offers many possibilities for experimentation, and I wanted to contribute to the event with a themed installation in which I construct an instrument from the pre-cinema era that exploits the illusion of movement: the Zoetrope. Atlantis is a utopian place mentioned in history from ancient Greece to the present particularly dear to philosophers, who often use it to present their idea of an ideal civilization to the public. Many speculate about the existence of this past civilization because tangible evidence is lacking: what if an archaeologist had unearthed a vase that tells the story of this civilization by exploiting the illusion of motion? One only has to attend the exhibition to find out.

During the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to construct one of the earliest tools for viewing moving images: the zoetrope.
This pre-film device produces the illusion of motion by displaying a sequence of drawings or photographs showing the progressive stages of that motion.
The zoetrope consists of a cylinder with vertical cuts on the sides. On the inner surface of the cylinder is a band with images of a series of sequential photographs. As the cylinder rotates, the user looks through the slits at the images passing through it. The scanning of the slits prevents the images from blurring, and the user sees a rapid succession of images, producing the illusion of motion.

Participants will also have the opportunity to draw their own animation to look through the zoetrope and thus learn some of the basic rules for drawing moving images.
